Local companies and volunteers unite to ensure 1750 preschoolers enter school ready to learn!

By 3 o’clock on May 17th, the last batch of bright red United Way KReady Kids backpacks were delivered to local agencies across the Seacoast.  After two months of donating school supplies, dollars, and time, 1750 preschoolers will enter kindergarten ready to learn.  Here’s a snapshot of the impact of United Way’s 6th annual K-Ready Kids:

10 sponsors including LTC Partners, Kennebunk Savings Bank, Liberty Mutual, Heinemann Publishing, John Hancock, Lonza, Seacoast Media Group, D.F. Richard, Internet Essentials, and Hampton Rotary.

8 companies ran school supply drives in April, including LTC Partners, John Hancock, Heinemann Publishing, Federal Savings Bank, Sunlife Financial, Ocean Properties, Frisbie Memorial Hospital, and Albany International.  They shattered their previous records and allowed us to assemble our greatest literacy kits yet.

75+ volunteers sorting supplies and packing/distributing backpacks throughout May.

6 days at our gracious host’s site, Seacoast Media Group – this event would not be possible without use of their space year after year.

5,000 bookmarks to be given to local libraries promoting our KReady Kids calendar and activities to families.

8,750 books in the hands of preschoolers to help start their own libraries at home (5,250 donated by Heinemann!)

3 trucks and our pals Ed, Heather, and Rich from UPS who we can count on every year to handle our giant backpack orders.

A special thanks to the Passport Center for their incredible boxes we use to store and deliver the backpacks, the VISA Center for extra parking this year, and Belle Peppers Cafe and Tradeport Pizza for their lunch donation.

But the biggest impact?  1750 happy kiddos at 55 early education centers, Head Starts, and preschools in 20 Seacoast communities who will have the tools they need to continue learning and growing over the summer and enter kindergarten ready for success.  Give these companies and volunteers a round of applause – they rocked it this year!
