The Tocqueville Society
Only 26 years old when he came to America in 1831, Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville spent nine months in the United States. His observations, readings and discussions with eminent Americans formed the basis of Democracy in America. Perhaps his most important observation was that Americans helped each other in times of need. He recognized, applauded and immortalized the voluntary spirit that lives in America's heart.
In 1996, United Way of the Greater Seacoast's Alexis de Tocqueville Society was formally created by a small group of committed supporters. Since then, membership has grown to more than 30 individuals and families who contribute in excess of $10,000 annually to the United Way. Donations from these generous benefactors represent nearly 10% of all the money we raise annually.
FIRST TIME TOCQUEVILLE CHALLENGE GRANT!
Once again, Barbara and Cyrus Sweet have generously donated a $250,000 challenge grant for the 2007 annual community campaign. For the first time, a portion of the challenge grant is dedicated to Tocqueville Society level gifts of $10,000 or more. We hope the generosity of this grant will encourage new members to join the Tocqueville Society and inspire existing members to increase their support this year. Learn more
