How We Do It

A successful approach to building a better community for all of us who live and work in the Greater Seacoast area includes four interdependent strategies:

Mobilizing volunteers and strengthening nonprofits:  Through our Volunteer Action Center and Day of Caring events, UWGS engages thousands of individuals, families, and businesses. Every day these volunteers give their talents, time and goods to improve people's lives and strengthen nonprofit organizations.

Smarter investments through fundraising and grant making:  UWGS has a long history of supporting non-profit client service agencies through monetary grants. We will continue to do so by investing in those organizations that work best. To focus resources on the four priority issues (housing, healthcare, substance abuse and transportation), we're also making new strategic impact investements to focus on the underlying causes and find lasting solutions in these critical areas.

Collaborative initiatives:   Reconizing that no one organization can solve our community's most serious problems, UWGS has become a leading force for creating partnerships and coalitions that bring together policy makers, businesses, service agencies and donors to develop proactive and innovative approaches.  In addition, we are actively participating in many collaborative initiatives throughout the Seacoast region.

Public education and policy:   Traditionally, United Way has not been active in the public policy arena but that too is changing. To achieve real results on our priority issues (housing, healthcare, substance abuse and transportation) will require outreach and education to raise public awareness and stimulate advocacy to change policies at the federal, state and local levels.

Together, we get results no one could accomplish alone.
That's the United Way.
