Affordable Housing

With one of the least affordable housing markets in the country, stable housing is out of reach for many individuals and families in our community.  The extremely high housing costs of the Seacoast region have far-reaching consequences for our whole community.

United Way of the Greater Seacoast is working with a broad spectrum of community partners including businesses, developers, and municipal planners to find long-term solutions to increase the availability of decent homes community members like teachers, fire fighters, and home healthcare workers can afford.

Did you know...

  • The median home price in the Seacoast housing market is $290,000. Household income needed to afford this median home price is $94,200.
  • Residents who have been living here for generations can no longer afford to stay, especially when incomes become fixed or wages have not kept pace with increases in property taxes or essential living expenses like heating oil.
  • Spending more than 30% of income on housing costs leaves less money available to cover other necessities like food, heating oil, or childcare.
  • The homeless end up staying longer in temporary housing because there is no affordable place to move. Business leaders struggle to attract new employees to the area.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has lifted more people above the poverty line than any other federal program, yet an estimated $5.2 million in tax credits went unclaimed in the Seacoast region last year.

United Way of the Greater Seacoast has provided leadership and technical assistance to a local coalition called the "Asset Building Coalition" which has worked collaboratively to set-up Volunteer Income Tax Preparation sites on the seacoast.

This year, volunteers serving at two sites (housed at Northeast Credit Union in Portsmouth and Dover) have prepared over 350 tax returns, totaling more than $280,000 in total refunds. Of that total, "Earned Income Credits" and "Childcare Credits" totaled more than $100,000.
